How Can I Update or Change My Address with the IRS?

If you need to change or update your address with the IRS you can do it in any of the following ways:

You will need to verify your identity when you update your address with the following information: your full name, your new address, your old address, your date of birth and your SSN, ITIN or EIN.

You can file your taxes utilizing your new address as a method of updating your address.

You can fill out one of the following forms to update your address with the IRS.

Individuals can use the following -- Form 8822, Change of Address and businesses needing to make and update would use-- Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party - Business. For the business form, changes to responsible parties must be made within 60 days.

Simply download the form, fill out the information as directed, and send it into the IRS.

You also have the option of sending in a written statement regarding your change of address. Be sure to include all of the necessary information in your statement including your full name, your new address, your old address, your date of birth and your SSN, ITIN or EIN.


Joint filers should both include their info when submitting a form or statement indicating a change of address. If you are authorized to change an address for another taxpayer, the following form must be included with your forms or written statement: Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative
